OVERVIEW

  • AMITIZA is a locally acting ClC-2 chloride channel activator1
  • AMITIZA promotes fluid secretion into the intestinal lumen1
  • In clinical studies, no clinically significant changes were seen in serum electrolyte levels1

MECHANISM OF ACTION

THE ROLE OF CHLORIDE CHANNELS IN THE INTESTINAL TRACT

  • Chloride channels are key regulators in the intestinal tract, actively transporting chloride ions into the lumen. Sodium ions and fluids passively follow2,3,4
  • By regulating fluid absorption and secretion, chloride channels help regulate fluid balance5
  • In clinical studies, no clinically significant changes were seen in serum electrolyte levels1

WHAT MAKES AMITIZA DIFFERENT?

  • AMITIZA directly targets CIC-2 chloride channels via its mechanism of action (MOA),1 distinguishing it from osmotic laxatives
  • AMITIZA promotes fluid secretion into the intestinal lumen1

IN DEPTH

AMITIZA is a selective chloride channel activator.1 Chloride is a primary driver of fluid secretion in the gut.6

As the type-2 chloride channel (ClC-2) is activated and chloride is secreted into the intestinal lumen, sodium ions and water follow paracellularly.2,3,4
